Best Mill Village?

An interesting article was found among the papers of the late David Smith, the first Mayor of Pacolet. The paper is titled "Why Pacolet is the Best Mill Village in the South in Which to Live". The front sheet states that the notes are copied from a Community Fair Program dated October, 1921. Nothing is known about the Community Fair publication. However, the primary source of all the information had to come from the Pacolet Manufacturing Company. The paper is a detailed account of costs and employee facts that could only have come from the mill company.

Some of the changes from 1921 to now are startling. This is particularly true when it comes to costs and wages paid. Keep in mind there are still people living in Pacolet today that were alive in 1921. This change has happened in one person's lifetime. Cilck on Best Village to read the article.
